Asia in the form of Pegasus
|
Item Code : OM08
Artist / Cartographer : Heinrich Bünting
Size: 288 x 364mm
Price: S$ 230.00
This beautiful hand-coloured
reproduction beautifully illuminated in 22 carat shell gold is of an extremely rare
woodcut map of Asia in the form of the winged horse, Pegasus, by Heinrich Bünting
(1545-1606). A curious cartographic rarity, it is among the earliest examples of
decorative maps of its kind. Very little is known of Bünting, he was professor of
Theology at Hanover, his work, however, is better known. It appeared in the
religious commentary, Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae - Travels According to the
Scriptures (1581-1585). The head represents Asia Minor with the mouth at Istanbul.
The wings portray Central Asia and Siberia - Tartaria and Scythia respectively -
while the Caspian Sea lies between the wings and the horse's back. Persia is
delineated by the saddle cloth; the left foreleg curves back on itself to contain the
Persian Gulf. The two hind legs represent the Indian and Malay peninsulas. Available UNMOUNTED only. Please note colour of the actual reproduction map is slightly different from what you see here.
