This view of Thian Hock Keng Temple is after a drawing by Alfred T. Agate, a botanical draftsman who visited Singapore in February, 1842 during the course of an American expedition of the Pacific.

The temple was completed in 1840 and is Singapore's oldest and most important Hokkein temple. From 1860 to 1955, it also housed the Hokkein Huay Kuan (Clan Association).
