This view was drawn from an old photograph. It shows Read Bridge with Clarke Quay on the left and North Boat Quay to the right (around 1893).
Today, Read Bridge is replaced by Merchant Bridge, a wooden structure built in 1881.
Do you know?
Clarke Quay is named after Andrew Clarke, appointed Governor of Singapore in 1873. The quay was known locally as Cha Chun Tau - a jetty for boats carrying firewood.
